At the time of the Civil War he was residing at Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois. His military record notes he was 6'2" tall and had blue eyes, light hair and a light complexion. He served as a Private in Company B of the 22nd Illinois Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Belmont (Missouri) November 7, 1861 - this battle was the first combat test for Ulysses S. Grant. George was discharged on a surgeon's certificate on June 30, 1862. However, his veteran's record lists him as being discharged July 7, 1864? |

GEORGE C. CHAPMAN ANSWERS LAST CALL
LAST LOCAL VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR DIES AT AGE OF 98
On May 2, 1934, Wednesday afternoon, George C. Chapman, aged 98, last local surviving veteran of the Civil War passed away at his home in this place. The funeral services will be held on Friday at two o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church of which he was a member. Mr. Chapman was wounded at the battle of Belmont and honorably discharged July 7, 1864. He was a member of Co. B 22nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He is survived by daughter-in-law Mrs. Mae Chapman, with whom he made his home and a granddaughter, Miss Isabel Earl, of Tampa, Fla.
For many years the deceased has been confined to a wheel chair.
