      Area Pilot Dies in Crash
Gerald (Jerry) Bollard of RD 1, Linesville, well-known agricultural pilot, was killed in the crash of his single-engine plane Friday near Dover, Ohio.
Bollard, 29, was dusting a field of small pine trees when his plane hit a pole, fell to the ground and burst into flames. Wreckage was scattered over 300 feet. He was dusting the trees for the Status Development Co. of Zoarville, Ohio.
Owner and operator of the Bollard Aviation service at Linesville, he also was a flight instructor. He established Linesville Airport in 1955, a year after his graduation from Linesville-Conneaut-Summit High School. He served as a U.S. Air Force flight instructor for two years in Tokyo and for two more years in the States.
He opened a flight training school at Linesville in 1959 and began his aerial agricultural application service (crop dusting) in 1960.
At least twice in recent years Bollard escaped injury in plane accidents. In January 1960 his plane crashed through ice on Pymatuning Lake. He and his passenger, Herman Kimple, Linesville assistant chief of police, walked three-quarters of a mile across the frozen lake to shore.
In April 1961 a sudden snowstorm forced him to land his agricultural plane in a field near Chardon, Ohio. At that time after a smooth landing he remarked, "It was luck, being in the right place at the right time."
He was born at Meadville Jan. 31, 1935, a son of Victor and Geraldine Litwiler Bollard, and had lived all his life in the Linesville area.
He was a member of Lantana, Fla., Elks Lodge; Linesville American Legion Post; Aviation Owners and Pilots Assn.; Pennsylvania Flying Farmers; and Crawford County Police Encampment.
He is survived by his widow, the former Mary Alice Swafford; three children, Brenda Lee, Joyce and Tim Martin, all at home; his parents of Lantana; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Judith) Lucas of Espyville; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Litwiler, and paternal grandfather, Dale Bollard, all of Linesville.
Friends of the family may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thurman M. Houghton Funeral Home, Linesville. Other arrangements are incomplete.
