Man Dies in Linesville House Fire
Ray Cottrell, 51, 300 S. Pymatuning St., Linesville, died of asphyxiation in a raging fire at his home about 5 a.m. Thursday Feb. 22.
According to Linesville Volunteer Fire Chief, Frederick Gilliland, Cottrell placed a call to a telephone operator at 4:57 a.m., reporting the fire, but was not able to complete the call. The operator, able to trace the call to Linesville, called fire headquarters at the Arlington Hotel and asked if a fire had been reported in Linesville. She was informed that no fire had been reported and then told the fire headquarters that someone in Linesville area was in serious trouble. The siren was then sounded and at about the same time neighbors had noticed the fire and sent in an alarm.
Cottrell was found by firemen near the entrance to the back door. He was alone in the home.
The house, which is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Collins of Linesville, was gutted by the blaze. Damages to the cement block four room structure amount to approximately $6,000 and the house and contents were a complete loss.
When firemen arrived at the house the inside was a "raging inferno." The Pennsylvania Fire Marshal arrived at the scene Thursday morning but has given no official report on the cause of the fire.
Chief Gilliland said three trucks were at the fire scene and six water lines were used. The fire was out by 7 a.m. but the truck remained to direct traffic and check the building until noon.
Ray Donald Cottrell was born at Pittsburgh July 4, 1921, a son of Harry and Ethel Cottrell. He was formerly a salesman for Clearfield Hardware Co. He was a member of Linesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Linesville American Legion Post.
Survivors include three sons, Gary A. Cottrell, Conneaut Lake; Ronald R. and Clinton Cottrell; his mother, Mrs. Ethell Cottrell; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Scott; a brother, Williard Cottrell, all of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday afternoon at the Thurman M. Houghton Funeral Home, Linesville, with the Rev. Robert Gumbert, pastor of Linesville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was at Linesville Cemetery.
Bearers were Leo Morian, Jerry Bossard, Mike Clark, Mark Rhoades, George Noey and John Kaltenbaugh.

for Raymond and Audrey Cottrell. Note that they both were not truthful about their ages - Ray was actually born in 1920 and Audrey was born in 1924. They both adjusted their ages to make sure they were "of legal age" (21 in Pennsylvania at the time) to get married without parental consent.
