    Valentine enlisted in the Civil War at Meadville on March 9, 1865. He was mustered in as a Private with Company E of the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry - noted as Captain Walker's unit. At that time he was noted as being dark complected, 5'9" tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was mustered out with his unit June 25, 1865 at New Berne, North Carolina.

    • from the August 8, 1899 issue of the Linesville Herald:
      SUDDEN DEATH IN LINESVILLE TO-DAY. While seated on the lawn, talking with W.P. Stewart who was cutting stone for Amzi Brown's new walk, a few minutes after 2 o'clock to-day, Valentine Carnes fell over and expired in a few seconds, of apoplexy. He was about 50 years of age and leaves three sons and a daughter. He was a son of Gabriel Carnes, this place, and a brother of Arthilla, Hulsey and Luther Carnes. He had been in ill health for several years, troubled with dropsy. He leaves an endowment of $600 in the Knights of Maccabees to his heirs; had drawn out $400 during his illness. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made as we go to press.
