Linesville Child Hit By Car, Dies
Randy Armstrong, 5, of Linesville died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 1966, as the result of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car in front of his home.
The accident, the county's first traffic fatality of 1966, occurred about 8 a.m. Monday as Randy and his twin brother Ricky set out for kindergarten. The boys were standing on the curb in front of their home, 356 E. Erie St., waiting to cross the street as their mother, Mrs. Ellis W. Armstrong, watched from the doorway.
Randy darted suddenly to the street, according to Herman Kimple, Linesville police officer, into the path of a car operated by Thomas F. Collins Sr., Linesville mayor. Witnesses told Kimple that the car was proceeding slowly and that the accident was unavoidable.
Mrs. Howard Woodard, RN, passenger in a car driving by, stopped to assist Kimple in administering first aid to the boy. Kimple, Mrs. Woodard and Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong took the lad to Spencer Hospital. Dr. Daniel D. Maloney, county coroner, stated that Randy's death was the result of chest injuries. His other injuries were a fractured left arm and shoulder and fractured skull.
Mayor Collins who had been driving to Meadville to Crawford County Courthouse where he is court crier, was treated for shock at City Hospital, and was released.
Randy Jay Armstrong was born June 5, 1960, in Meadville, a son of Ellis William (Bill) and Janet Cornmesser Armstrong.
He is survived by his parents; his twin, Ricky Lee; another brother, Jon Martin, at home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cornmesser of North East; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Daisy Armstrong; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Cornmesser Sr. of Oklawaha, Fla.; and several aunts and uncles.
