Civil War - Confederate. 1st Lieutenant with Company G of the 15th Louisiana Infantry.
He attended Westminster and Allegheny colleges and was admitted to the Bar Association in Mercer County. He then moved to Bathrop, Louisiana where he practiced law in Morehouse and adjoining parishes in Louisiana.
While in Louisiana, the Civil War broke out and James enlisted August 6, 1861 in Company G of the 15th Louisiana Infantry. He was wounded June 30, 1862 at the battle of Frazier's Farm, Virginia and was promoted to First Lieutenant July 25, 1862. He was also wounded at Chancellorsville May 3, 1863 and then was captured by Union soldiers May 10, 1864 in the wake of the Wilderness battle. He was confined to Fort Delaware and after that he became one of "The Immortal 600" - see wiki article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immortal_Six_Hundred that tells about some of the horrible things he had to endure while a prisoner. He was transferred back to Fort Delaware where he relented and signed an oath of allegiance to the U.S. on June 16, 1865. He signed an amnesty agreement on October 19, 1865. JAMES D. BOWMAN
Died after a long illness at his home in Linesville, on Feb. 5, 1914.
He was born near Jamestown, Pa., May 11, 1836, and was educated in the district schools and at Westminster and Allegheny colleges.
He studied law with AG Gillespie of Greenville, Pa., and was admitted to the bar in Mercer county. Mr. Bowman went to Bathrop, La., soon after, and for the next four years, practiced law in Morehouse and adjourning parishes.
He served as a first Lieutenant in the Confederate army during the Civil War, and soon after its close came North and engaged in the mercantile business in Linesville, where he also practiced law.
During his years of business activity, Mr. Bowman took an active part in all work for the betterment of the community. He was known as a man of marked ability and sound judgment, whose advice was much sought.
He is survived by his widow and daughter Orline, who live in Linesville, and by one son, Prof. Roscoe Bowman, of Steelton, Pa.
