    A puzzle indeed?! The October 18, 1918 issue of the Butler Citizen notes that Ira is one of the men listed as being drafted into the military and heading to Camp Greenleaf. No proof can be found of other military service for Ira. Did he get there and they decided they didn't need him? Was he excused for previous service? Or, did he truly serve again?

      IRA A. BERKHEIMER
      Ira A. Berkheimer, 80, of RD 2, Linesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1973, at City Hospital, Meadville, where he had been a patient for one month.
      He was born in Bedford County on July 20, 1892, a son of Shannon and Rebecca Fickas Berkheimer. He married Jennie Brenneman who died in 1966. Mr. Berkheimer retired from the police force of J and L Steel Co. at Pittsburgh. After moving to Linesville, he was employed at the state liquor store at Andover, Ohio, and by Protane Gas Co. at Conneaut Lake.
      Mr. Berkheimer was an avid bowler and was well known to the many area bowlers who competed with him, especially at Penn Line Lanes. He had bowled in regular league action prior to entering the hospital.
      Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Ettie Suters, New Paris, Mrs. Fleeta Cristman and Mrs. Elsie Thompson, both of Pittsburgh; and Mrs. Emma Milnes of Youngstown, Ohio; and three brothers, CR of RD 2, Conneautville, Bruce of Aliquippa and Lynden of Sun City, Ariz.
      Services for Ira A. Berkheimer were held Saturday afternoon at the Thurman M. Houghton Funeral Home, Linesville. The Rev. Robert Miller, pastor of the Valley United Methodist Church, Conneautville, officiated.
      Interment was at Linesville Cemetery with Mike Klaitch, Tom Hackworth, Donald Brenneman, Herb Giles, Carlyle Loucks and Charles Shunkwiler serving as bearers.
