Military Service |
21 Aug 1862 |
Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA |
A Civil War veteran, Orville registered for the draft in Meadville and enlisted in Company H, 145th Pennsylvania Infantry at Erie, on August 21, 1862. He was wounded in the wrist at Fredericksburg, Virginia, Dec. 13, 1862; promoted to Corporal of his company, June 4, 1864. He was captured at Petersburg, Virginia June 16, 1864 and was taken to Andersonville where he was held as a prisoner until April 28, 1865. He was discharged from service at Harrisburg, Pa., by General Order, May 18, 1865. That he survived Andersonville is a sign that he had a very strong constitution.
In 1894 he was granted an $8 per month military pension.
The January 2, 1906 issue of the Linesville Herald (photo not available) noted: "Mr. O.H. Cram has returned from a trip south, going to the battlefield of Chattanooga and the prison reserve at Andersonville where he was among the sufferers during the prison days of the rebellion. The government furnishes transportation to the survivors." To go back and visit the place where he had endured untold hardships again points to a strong will.
