Military Service 6 Nov 1862  Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA Find all individuals with events at this location
Gabriel enlisted in the Civil War November 6, 1862 and served as a Private in Company H of the 83rd Pennsylvania. Gabriel suffered from exposure and was treated at Carvner Hospital at Washington, D.C. on August 10, 1864. He continued to serve until July 14, 1865 when he was honorably discharged. Due to exposure, he suffered from "inflammatory rheumatism" the rest of his life.

In 1894 he was assigned a $12 month pension from the military. The April 16, 1896 issue of the Conneautville Courier notes that Gabriel's pension was increased from $18 to $30 per month, with $150 in back pay.
