James enlisted as a Private in Company C of the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry on June 12, 1861, only a few months after the war began. He transferred to Company I of the 5th United States Cavalry October 30, 1862 and was mustered out with his unit August 8, 1865. He served for almost the whole duration of the war. |

The funeral of James M. Davis was held Friday. The deceased passed away May 5, 1909, aged 66 years and 7 months. He had been ailing for months. He was born in York State. He came to Linesville with parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth Davis who moved from Kansas in 1858, but soon went to Indiana where he enlisted in the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry Volunteers and re-enlisted serving four years and four months. He returned to Linesville and married Phoebe Stage who survives him. After a few years he went to Pawtucket, R.I.; from there he moved to Canada, thence to California, then to Richmond, Va., and came back to this place in 1903. Chaplain JW Plannett conducted the services at the house. The GAR escorted the bier and interment was made in the Linesville cemetery.
HH Davis and Mrs. Serepta Johnson of Albion; Mrs. BF Oates and Mrs. Elizabeth Pattison, of Geneva, Ky.; AF Davis, of Boston, Mass., brothers and sisters. His father and one brother died in Civil War.
